What makes corridor lanes different?
The East Coast corridor packs dense metros, ports, distribution centers and toll roads into a short stretch of map. Loads can be plentiful, but trucks spend more time in traffic, pay more tolls and face tighter delivery windows. Short lengths of haul mean more stops per week, and every stop carries the risk of a slow dock.

Why does backhaul imbalance matter so much?
Freight flowing into the Northeast often outweighs freight flowing out, so trucks that deliver into the region may struggle to find a good load home. The outbound leg may pay less, require deadhead or wait for a reload. A lane is only as strong as the round trip, so price the headhaul with the backhaul in mind.
Consider a long-haul fleet running produce and consumer goods north from Georgia and the Carolinas into New England. The northbound loads pay well. Southbound, the trucks either wait for freight, run empty to a better market or take a lower-paying load. If the math only works on the northbound leg, the fleet is really pricing half a trip.

How should a fleet measure lane profitability?
Measure revenue per truck per day on each lane, after the costs that vary by lane: tolls, deadhead miles, detention hours, driver time and any lane-specific fees. Revenue per load hides a lot. A shorter, lower-paying run that turns quickly can beat a longer, higher-paying run that ties up a truck for days.
- Pick a recent month of loads on the lane
- Total the revenue, including accessorials actually collected
- Subtract lane-specific costs: tolls, deadhead, detention time, layovers
- Divide by the number of truck-days the lane consumed
- Compare to your other lanes and your fixed cost per truck-day
This does not need to be perfect. It needs to be honest enough to rank lanes from strongest to weakest.
When does borrowing against a lane make sense?
Borrowing makes sense when the lane earns steadily after its real costs, and the funding bridges a timing gap such as slow shipper payment or a temporary dip in volume. It does not make sense when a lane loses money after tolls, deadhead and detention. Funding a weak lane only makes the loss last longer.
Good reasons to fund:
- A strong lane with a shipper that pays on longer terms: working capital or a line of credit
- Equipment that improves a lane's economics, such as telematics that cut deadhead and detention: equipment financing
Weak reasons: covering a lane that has not earned in months, or chasing volume without checking the round trip.
Can a weak lane be fixed instead?
Often. Reprice with the customer using your truck-day math, add a reliable backhaul partner, shift appointment times to avoid rush hours, or combine the lane with a nearby shorter run. If nothing changes the numbers, moving trucks to a stronger lane is usually worth more than any funding.

There is no universal number. It depends on the rates at both ends and what else the truck could be doing. If deadhead pushes a lane's truck-day earnings below your other lanes, it is too much for that lane.
Will funders ask about my lanes?
